7 tips for masterful GoPro slow-motion shots

Slow motion is impressive.

...if they are used correctly.

And that's not so difficult.

The following 7 tips will show you how to create slow motion so that you can already amaze the viewers of your next GoPro video ?

1. the principle of slow motion

First of all, it's important to note that there is no separate "slow motion" function.

A slow motion is only created afterwards with a video editing programme.

The normal video recording consists of many individual frames that are played back one after the other so quickly that they look like a fluid film. (For this, the recording should not fall below about 24fps).

(fps = Frames per Second)

To create a slow motion, the recording is now simply played back more slowly.

For example, a 50fps recording can be played back at only 25fps. - Half speed. (At the same time, this doubles the playback time).

Attention: A 24fps recording at half speed would only have 12 frames per second. Here the eye can already partially recognise the individual frames. - The video is no longer smooth.

Therefore, it is important to use the right setting when filming.

2 Selecting the right (slow-motion) setting

The prerequisite for a reasonable slow motion is the right camera setting. The frame rate is very important. - That is, the number of frames that are taken per second.

There are differences depending on the selected resolution (and gimbal for gopro).

For example, 25fps can be set just as well as 240fps.

For slow motion, a high frame rate must be selected. The higher the frame rate, the more you can slow down the recording without the video starting to "falter".

For a better understanding an example
100fps -> 4 times slower -> 25fps (still smooth)

24fps -> 4 times slower -> 6fps (stutters)

For a decent slow motion you should film at least with 50fps.

But it only gets really interesting above that.

With 120 or 240fps you can achieve really impressive results.

3) How to create slow motion easily.

In many video editing programmes, all you have to do is move a slider. In the free GoPro Studio it looks like this:

Slider to the left -> video slows down

Slider to the right -> video becomes faster

Really a simple effect that can be implemented in a few seconds.

It becomes more interesting when selecting the scenes in which you use slow motion.

4 Which shots are suitable for slow motions?

Most shots have the potential for good or funny slow motion. Typical uses for slow motion include:

  • Flight phase of a jump
  • Tricks of all kinds
  • Falls
  • When drops of water splash through the air
  • When dirt flies through the air
  • When snow flies through the air
  • Generally speaking, any scene that involves high speed is suitable.

For most action shots, this is the case.

Slow motion then helps the viewer to discover things that cannot be perceived at all at normal speed. Because it simply goes too fast.

In this shot, slow motion would be very good for showing the viewer the individual drops of water flying through the air. In normal speed you can't see them at all.

5. untypical motifs for slow motion

But it is always amazing how normal things look slowed down in slow motion.

The funniest part of a video of mine, for example, is by far a slow-motion scene at lunch.

Faces and grimaces are the key words here. ?

6. the effect of the slow-motion effect

The impact of the slow motion effect falls into one of these three categories:

Impress: The audience is impressed by the things they cannot perceive at normal speed.
Amuse: Slow motion of normal situations, such as eating, can make the viewer laugh.
Emphasise: In general, any scene can be specially emphasised by deliberately slowing it down. Slow motion draws the viewer's attention in particular.
