Lesser-known sights of Riga

Riga is one of those European capitals that you can visit many times. Winter here is not like spring, summer or autumn. Located on the banks of the Daugava River, the city impresses with its charming architecture, local climate and many places worth visiting. No wonder you want to come back here.
Riga in a wooden setting
It is no secret that the Latvian capital is famous for beautiful apartment buildings in the Art Nouveau style. If we want to admire these buildings, of course, the main point of the trip will be Art Nouveau. In addition to the monumental architecture of the modern era and the charming old town, which remembers a more distant history, Riga, however, hides something else in terms of buildings. Anyone who looks in here for a moment will pay attention to the colorful wooden houses. Many of these pearls can be found in the very center. In your free time, you should go to the other side of the Daugava to the island of Kipsala and in the area of Kalnciema Street. The first of the above locations will delight with an incredible mirage of old houses and new buildings, the style of which perfectly matches the atmosphere of the restored fishing coast. This corner today is one of the most expensive and famous local residential areas. However, nothing prevents you from taking a quiet walk here. Kalnciema, located nearby, is worth a visit on Saturday to get acquainted with other less well-known sights of Riga. In this beautiful wooden landscape we can count on a weekend market and accompanying local delicacies, exhibitions, films and concerts.
Another view of the city
Wandering the streets of Riga, regardless of the time of year, is a lot of fun. However, if during your stay in the capital of Latvia you want to look at the city from a slightly different point of view, it is worth including local points of view in the trip program. The undisputed number one in this area is the unmistakable Church of St. Peter. We meet this one of the oldest medieval buildings in the Baltic region in the heart of the Old Town. The temple impresses with its body. Inside, however, visitors can see the beautiful central nave, the statue of the Knight Roland and the tower rising to a height of 123 meters. We won't be able to reach the top of the latter. We guarantee, however, that the second gallery, located at 72 meters, offers a phenomenal view of the Daugava River and the red roofs of the old town. In the church itself, characterized by excellent acoustics, it is also worth going to a concert. We will be next to him when he calls back to win "Riga dimd" - a famous Latvian traditional song. Another place to admire the panorama of Riga is the glazed Skyline Bar, located on the 26th floor of the Radisson Blu Hotel.
The best Latvian drinks
The fashion for craft beer has also reached Riga. This offer seems even more interesting, since the oldest local breweries have been operating here continuously since the middle of the XIX century. Aldaris, although in the early 90s of the last century came under the wing of the Carlsberg concern, still boasts excellent Latvian beer. In addition, he founded a Brewing Museum on the outskirts of the city, where, in addition to tasting alcoholic beverages, we can also catch a big sip of local beer history. Of the bars worth visiting, we especially recommend Folkklubs inn Ala Pagrabs and the Labietis Pub. In both places we will be able to enjoy an intriguing bottled beer. Many places offering craft beer have also been created recently around the Old Town. By the way, when getting acquainted with native Polish drinks, do not forget about the Riga black balsam. This 45% offer is an herbal liqueur based on 24 different herbal ingredients. Stories say that this specialty was supposed to cure Empress Catherine II. To this day, it is recommended, among other things, for colds, frostbite, bites, headaches, fractures of teeth and bones.
Riga secrets
Less well-known sights of Riga sometimes look modest. However, if we plan to get to know the city from the inside, it is also worth paying attention to details that are invisible at first glance. They often have quite interesting stories behind them. Since the 14th century, the Riga Great Guild has operated by uniting merchants enjoying the greatest wealth. Promotion to a member of this association was a difference in itself, but not everyone could receive such an honor. At the beginning of the 20th century, one of the richest Riga artisans was repeatedly denied this honor. Finally, he stopped his efforts, took offense at the Guild and bought a plot of land located opposite the building it occupies. There he built an apartment building and placed two black bristly cats on its turrets. After being insulted, they were returned to the guild building. By a court decision and in exchange for joining the association, the owner turned them over.
