ESPN rumoured to confirm purchase of LaLiga rights this week

ESPN will start broadcasting LaLiga in August 2021

The official announcement is expected today along with confirmation that ESPN LaLiga coverage will begin in August 2021.

World Soccer Talk has contacted LaLiga and ESPN for comment. Representatives from both organisations declined to comment.

ESPN had been in talks to acquire LaLiga rights in the US market for several months, which World Soccer Talk first confirmed in January. As part of the global contract between the broadcaster and the league, beIN SPORTS has exclusive rights in the US until 2024.

However, from 2019 beIN SPORTS is facing serious transportation problems, preventing LaLiga from becoming a more successful league in the US due to limited distribution.

While LaLiga clubs have struggled to cover their games in beIN SPORTS over the past two years, Spain's top league has lost ground in more established US leagues such as the Premier League and Liga MX.

Important agreements have been signed with media companies ViacomCBS and Disney / ESPN to expand the possibilities for each of these respective leagues. The Italian Serie A and German Bundesliga have recently narrowed the gap with La Liga.

ESPN's acquisition of LaLiga games will be a huge boost for the Spanish league, especially for major clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, who continue to build up their international fan base.

The following was also revealed by World Soccer Talk, as reported by the publication on Monday:

-A source familiar with the situation told World Soccer Talk that ESPN has begun training talent for LaLiga for the start of the 2021/22 season.

-In the United States, LaLiga president Javier Tebas has met with ESPN to discuss the rights deal and

-According to a World Soccer Talk source, one difference in ESPN's approach is that they are now focusing on securing multi-year football rights contracts.

ESPN's preparations to cover LaLiga should be announced in the coming days.

Many games are expected to be broadcast on ESPN , as well as on ESPN's main TV networks and ABC's on-air network.

Major media corporations are waging a streaming battle

The quest to win the rights to available major football and poker leagues and tournaments continues in the streaming wars between the major media companies (Disney / ESPN , NBCUniversal / Peacock, ViacomCBS / Paramount ). And if you want to play online poker, then the Danish operator bedstespiludenomrofus.com has the best deals.

Both NBCUniversal and ViacomCBS have publicly stated that football has played a significant role in attracting new subscribers to their streaming services.

Before The Office moved to Peacock, NBCUniversal saw the Premier League as the number one driving force for subscriptions and interaction with Peacock Premium.

Outside of the NFL, the Champions League was Paramount 's biggest source of new subscribers. The planned acquisition of LaLiga rights is a perfect fit for ESPN.

Disney's ESPN has picked up football rights for the past two years, including a long-term agreement with the German Bundesliga to broadcast every game.

In March 2020, as part of promotional campaigns and programmes to preserve the dignity of the games, Australian betting firm PointsBet, through its US subsidiary, PointsBet US, became aware of the growing audience for the LaLiga football product in North America.

ESPN has made football an important part of its plan to attract new customers, with the subscription service aiming to increase its user base by the end of 2021.

The big football leagues have been lacking so far. One of them is LaLiga, which includes heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid. Liga MX (whose rights are currently largely owned by Univision / TUDN) and the Premier League are the other two (owned by NBCUniversal).

The US rights to the English Premier League will go up for auction in the coming months.

Along with incumbent NBC Sports, CBS Sports, ESPN and other broadcasters are expected to fight for the rights.
